I used to work in cheque clearing, debit outwork. An employee (not me!) lost a bundle down the back of a piece of furniture and there they laid for more than six months, we cleared them.
Actually, Donald Duck could sign them and they'd probably still clear you know LOL.
I'm guessing though that the account that the cheque was written from is now closed though ? When the new company aquired the old one then they should have had accounts showing what cheques written/amount owing etc before closing the account.
Despite more than a hundred inquiries coming in the past week, the Shawnee County Commission on Thursday voted unanimously to cancel uncashed checks from the treasurer’s office dating to 2009.
The 3-0 vote came with the stipulation that people who claim they never got their check can go to the treasurer’s office and, for $10, have the issue investigated, said Commissioner Shelly Buhler. That fee, which covers administrative costs associated with researching the check in question, can be waived by the commission.
The commission was required by a resolution it passed in April to cancel the uncashed checks. The issue first came before the commission Dec. 29, but it voted to defer action until Thursday to give the treasurer’s office a chance to resolve some of the issues that had been brought up prior to the meeting.
The following week, the commission office fielded several inquiries about the checks by email and about a dozen over the phone, said Stephanie Mott, county commission office assistant. Treasurer Larry Wilson said he had more than 100 inquiries about the checks.
However, he said, only a couple of people had paid the $10 to have their check investigated.
“We won’t start until they pay the fee,” Wilson said.
As of Thursday, he said, he hadn’t reissued any of the checks. The investigations take a couple of weeks after the $10 is submitted, and the commission has to approve any reissued checks, he said.
Thursday’s vote canceled about 650 checks, worth $41,852.02, from 2009 to 2010. That might seem like a lot, Wilson said, but he assured commissioners that was a “minute number” compared to the number of checks his office issues in a year.
Wilson told commissioners canceling the checks en masse and handling disputes individually was the most efficient way to deal with uncashed checks.
“There’s 21 different departments who issue checks. We don’t know all the reasons why a check didn’t get to where it was going,” he said. “We have a lot of different variations of why somebody didn’t get a check, but all we know is it wasn’t cashed.”
